To be sufficient is to be enough and adequate. It is to be fit and competent for any task in life. It also covers the idea of something being strong enough to defend or stand against any danger. We have three Greek connotations that indicate the English word, "sufficient".
The first is 'arketos', which is to be "enough or adequate." The second is 'arkeo' which implies "satisfactory; to be possessed of unfailing strength; to be strong; to suffice; to be enough; to defend or ward off." The third is 'hikanoo', which means "to make sufficient or to render fit; to equip with adequate power to perform duties." More below!
Reference: 2 Corinthians 3:5 Berean Literal Bible (BLB)
'Not that we are sufficient from ourselves to reckon anything as of ourselves, but our sufficiency is of God.'
As a child of God, any form of confidence in the flesh is a disaster waiting to happen. Without the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit, you're not sufficient enough in the flesh to face any challenge in life. It doesn't matter how tough, muscular, physically strong, well-built, or charismatic you are, or even how advanced you are in any field of knowledge, the battles of life do not respect earthly titles, physical make-up, vocational positions, or your performance skills. The sooner you understand this, the better off you'll be.
Pastor EJC, but I speak English, French, Afrikaans and Italian, and I'm intellectually equipped to analyse any given situation...Beloved, all of these are good physical endowment effects but believe me, the only language the enemy understands is power. Therefore, depending on the Holy Spirit is the key to a consistent life of victory in Christ. That is where the real power lies. Acts 1:8 (NIV) reads, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you..."
Remember that the apostles assembled together, and were commanded not to depart from Jerusalem, until their powerhouse arrived (see Acts 1:4 KJV). Why? They were not sufficient on their own. To rely on their strength, knowledge and capabilities was an imminent error. So they needed to be equipped with adequate power to perform their assigned duties (Greek word: hikanoo).
Until you recognise the importance and profound influence of the Holy Spirit in your life and allow yourself to be engulfed with His divine power to face life's situations, your dependence on any well-meaning credit to the flesh will not carry you through in life. The phrase - "the arm of flesh will fail you" simply means that you can't afford to depend on your own competence, human effort, and attributes to get you through (see 2 Chronicles 32:8 NIV). It's not sufficient to function with humanly-based understanding. You must be clothed in the armour of God's power.
Ephesians 6:10-11 (NIV) says, "Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes." Notice the first statement: be strong in the Lord, not in yourself...and in His mighty power...not in your expertise, cognizance, prowess, and aptitude. His power is the only supreme sufficiency that comes with an assurance of unbeatable solidity and deluxe triumph.
The next versified utterance says, "Put on the full armour of God..." Again, it didn't say the full armour of man. Until you embrace your indomitable sufficiency - the precious Holy Spirit, you'll be at the mercy of the flesh and remain close to the door of defeat. 2 Corinthians 4:7 (KJV) further explained, "But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us." That means, the real power that sponsors our sufficiency comes from God and not from us.
Instead of leaning on your own strength, depend wholly and solely on the efficacious guidance of the Spirit, whose promptings and whispers are wiser than the world's best opinions. That means, recognise His ministry in your life; identify with Him through continual fellowship; pray in tongues oftentimes and lean on Him before you start any day in your life, and more so, continue to live your life in accordance with His leading process, in order to please God accurately; practise praying without ceasing; fast, study the Word and put it to work; then lean on Him till you reach the finish line.
I completely depend on Supreme Deity, and my sufficiency is of Him. In Him I live, move, and have my being. I'm clothed with the full armour of God and by the power of the Holy Spirit, I constantly raise the banner of perpetual victory in my world. Christ in me is my exceptional fitness, my unquestionable competence, my limitless power, and my extraordinary strength. Hallelujah!
