Reference: Ecclesiastes 3:11 New International Version (NIV)
"He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end."
God set eternity in the human heart, meaning that this is exactly how the human heart is created: It is set up with the mystery of timeless duration, yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
Christ is God's self-disclosure to man from beginning to end. And since God created everything through Christ, with the notability that nothing was created except through Him, it equally implies that God set eternity in the human heart through Christ (John 1:3 NLT). So Christ is the mind of God, both in His Word and in His works. On account of this truth, Christ is a mystery greater than eternity, which is a "perpetual" continuance or timelessness.
Eternity is a mystery, but Christ is a greater mystery distinguished by truths which cannot be discerned or fathomed by human reasoning, understanding and observation. The only mankind that has ever been furnished with the ability to gain the knowledge of God's mystery are those who are born of the Spirit. And one commonly shared interest or component of those born of the Spirit is "belief". In this sense, Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying" (John 11:25 ESV). So the born again Christians will experience eternity with God because they believe in Christ Jesus.
A belief is a mental state that affirms that something is the case. So this particular belief is an accepted attitude towards what God has done for mankind through Christ. It entails a strong conviction, which implies a substantial commitment to the believed claim. It involves a certainty in the form of receiving the Lord with a wholeheartedness, and it belongs to the declarative sense of knowledge that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in true knowledge of God's mystery, that is, Christ Himself. Once your belief system is rooted in the knowledge of Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour, you'll begin to discern and fathom the knowledge of what God has done through Christ, by the habitual leading of the Spirit, who guides into all truth.
To that effect, Pauline epistolary expression numbered as Colossians 2:2 reads:
"[For my hope is] that their hearts may be encouraged as they are knit together in [unselfish] love, so that they may have all the riches that come from the full assurance of understanding [the joy of salvation], resulting in a true [and more intimate] knowledge of the mystery of God, that is, Christ" (AMP).
Simply put, apostle Paul wants us to be woven into a tapestry of love, in touch with everything there is to know about God and His work. Then we will functionally excel with discerning mind and spirit which are confident and at rest, a mind and a heart that are focused on growing in the knowledge of Christ, God's great mystery, because all the richest treasures of wisdom and knowledge are embedded in that mystery and nowhere else. Thankfully, we've been shown the mystery by inward revelation, so we can begin to fathom what God has done from beginning to end. Stay tuned for part 9. Shalom!
