GOD IS GREAT - BY KING DAVID
SATURDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 2023
Today, I want us to consider the manner in which King David expressed His thankfulness to God, after a moment of deep wonder and contemplation of the goodness and extraordinary generosity which God had shown to him in manifold ways. His act of considering God's faithfulness with utmost attention, and his act of regarding steadily what the strong hand of God had done, are worthy of notice.
Reference: 2 Samuel 7:22 Amplified Bible (AMP) "Therefore You are great, O Lord God; for there is none like You, and there is no God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears."
God made a covenant of lasting peace, blessing and prosperity with King David, which was delivered by Nathan, the prophet. In it, God assured him saying, "your throne will be established forever." So Nathan spoke to David in accordance with all the words of the covenant and all of the vision he received on behalf of king David. David was greatly overwhelmed and melted by God's love for him, having been established in all the victories and successes the Lord granted him. He confidently relied on the favourable words from the prophet concerning God's promises, and then, he observed a remarkable prayer to that effect.
This was King David's prayer: "Then King David went in and sat [in prayer] before the Lord, and said, "Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house (family), that You have brought me this far? Yet this was very insignificant in Your eyes, O Lord God, for You have spoken also of Your servant's house (royal dynasty) in the distant future. And this is the law and custom of man, O Lord God. What more can David say to You? For You know (acknowledge, choose) Your servant, O Lord God. Because of Your word (promise), and in accordance with Your own heart, You have done all these great and astounding things to let Your servant know (understand)" (2 Samuel 7:18-21).
According to the content of his prayer, what followed next is our referenced Scripture: "Therefore You are great, O Lord God; for there is none like You, and there is no God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears."
And that is the part I want to focus on in this article. Beloved, God is great, and there is none like Him. He is the God that keeps forever, the promise He's made concerning His people. His covenant is trustworthy and full of His goodness. When He blesses, it continues forever. By personal application to ourselves, one thing needful in regard to these truths which are most familiar to us, is to bring them into close connection with our own personal life and experiences - by counting our blessings from God.
No matter how busy you are, learn to spend time in prayer, not just to make requests for your needs, but to acknowledge that God is the One that has blessed and brought you this far, into a state of established favour. Even the busiest of Christians must find time to be in prayer because God is good, and His presence inspires us with more confidence, comfort, hope and joy. Thank Him for His Spirit that dwells in you because the inhabitation of His Spirit is a distinguishing presence and character, with a glorious effect. Honour Him for empowering you to participate in His Kingdom of light and for the extraordinary gifts and blessings He has bestowed upon you.
Show your gratitude for His special favour and extravagant generosity, and for the influence of the Holy Spirit in your life which enables you to grow in conformity to His image. For indeed, God is great; there is none like Him, and there is no God besides Him, according to all that we have heard with our ears. Shalom!
